The Idomeni Crisis

In the period 2015-16, more than one million refugees and migrants arrived in Greece with a final destination in Western Europe. Almost all of them passed through Idomeni, a small village on the border of Greece – North Macedonia.

When the government in Skopje closed the border, thousands of people were trapped in the makeshift camp of Idomeni, next to the wire fence placed along the border. They waited there for months, under miserable conditions, in nylon tents and shacks, without water, heating and other necessities. Many times, they tried to cross the border, either peacefully or violently, but their efforts always failed. At the end of May 2016, the Greek Police evacuated the makeshift camp of Idomeni.
